Background:

 

Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organisation registered in Berlin. DRI promotes the political participation of citizens, accountability of state bodies and the development of democratic institutions worldwide.

 

DRI is implementing a two-year project to strengthen democratic consolidation in Sri Lanka by generating broad stakeholder participation in democratic reforms and contributing to the effective implementation of international human rights and labour conventions. DRI seeks to build awareness about the European Union’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) and contribute to a facts-based debate about the linkage between the trade concession and human rights and good governance. At the same time, DRI supports other dimensions of Sri Lanka’s political transition, notably the ongoing constitutional reform process, through its partnerships and support for dialogue between relevant stakeholders.

 

Objective and Role:

 

DRI is recruiting a Project Coordinator to join our Sri Lanka Country Office in Colombo. Under the overall supervision of the Country Representative, the Project Coordinator will act as the focal point for coordinating the operational aspects of all activities, events, publications, and other programmatic outputs of the project. These activities will include workshops, conferences, trainings and discussion sessions with a variety of participants from government, civil society, business, and international partners, which will take place at both national and local levels.

 

Duration and Location

 

The Project Coordinator will be based in Colombo with some travel to other provinces. The contract is a fixed term until the end of December 2017 with the possibility of extension.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

 

Lead on programme activities in the absence of the Country Representative;

Provide strategic advice to the Country Representative on design and implementation of the project framework and activities drawing on expert knowledge of Sri Lankan context;

Identify key contacts to Country Representative and maintain partnership relations;

Design, coordinate and implement the operational aspects of project activities in Sri Lanka, such as events, workshops, trainings and publications

Support the Country Representative in outreach to key stakeholders including representatives of civil society organisations, parliament and government, and the media, and in coordinating briefings and meetings;

Assist in the coordination of missions of international and national short term experts;

Manage the contact with and procurement for service providers for events, workshops, training and publications;

Collaborate with the Country Representative on M&E planning to give evidence for project implementation reports and event reports.

Education & Experience:

 

University degree in Law, Political Science, other social sciences, or a related discipline; Master’s degree strongly preferred.

· Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in supporting democracy, human rights and legal reform in transition countries;

 

· Minimum of 5 years of professional experience coordinating events and activities, such as workshops, conferences, trainings and discussion sessions, preferably as part of multi-stakeholder initiatives;

 

Demonstrable experience of leading on and coordinating the financial, logistical, and administrative aspects of project activity implementation;

Excellent knowledge of the Sri Lanka context, networking and communication skills, and experience working with a range of stakeholders including government, business, civil society;

· Experience in budget management and procurement is required;

 

Demonstrated experience of Monitoring and Evaluation methods;

Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality;

Ability to travel regularly in Sri Lanka;

Strong proficiency in English, fluency in Sinhala and/or Tamil.
